Chrislain Matsima to Crystal Palace: Would he fit Pierre Sage?
Foot Mercato reports that Crystal Palace have identified Augsburg centre-back Chrislain Matsima as a priority target amid uncertainty over Maxence Lacroix. In this article, I will assess his background, playing style and suitability for Pierre Sage’s system.
Crystal Palace appear to have identified FC Augsburg defender Chrislain Matsima as their priority centre-back target.
According to Foot Mercato editor-in-chief Sébastien Denis, Palace have set their sights on the 24-year-old Frenchman. Matsima is basically a replica of our beloved Max Lacroix – tall, physically dominating, fast and aggressive.
WHAT IS HIS BACKGROUND:
Matsima was born in Colombes, France, in May 2002 and joined the AS Monaco academy in 2017.
He made his professional debut against Strasbourg in September 2020, aged 18, and went on to make 41 senior appearances for Monaco. That included five appearances in European competition and involvement in three Ligue 1 podium finishes.
Regular football was not always available at Monaco, leading to loan spells with Lorient in 2022 and Clermont Foot during the second half of the 2023/24 season.
His true major breakthrough arrived after moving from Monaco to Augsburg on loan in August 2024.
Augsburg made the move permanent in January 2025 after Matsima quickly became an important part of their defence. The German club highlighted his intelligence, athleticism and ability in defensive challenges when they announced the transfer.
He played 30 matches during his first Bundesliga campaign and was named the league’s Rookie of the Month twice. Augsburg subsequently extended Matsima’s contract until June 2030, strengthening their position in any future negotiations – this is a barrier of entry though for our deal, Augsburg have no immediate pressure to sell him.
Matsima also has considerable international experience for his age. He represented France throughout the youth levels, won an Olympic silver medal in Paris and later captained France’s Under-21 side.
WHAT TYPE OF CENTRE-BACK IS HE?
The simplest description is that Matsima is an athletic, physically imposing centre-back who prefers defending proactively and on the frontfoot.
At approximately 1.93 metres, he is slightly taller than Lacroix and carries a clear aerial presence. He is comfortable attacking crosses, competing directly with centre-forwards and using his frame to protect the ball.
That size does not come at the expense of mobility. Matsima has good speed for a defender of his height and is capable of covering space behind a defensive line.
He is willing to step out and engage opponents rather than retreating towards his own penalty area. He watches for heavy touches, moves into midfield to challenge and tries to stop attacks before they gather momentum.
This is part of why he is similar to Lacroix:
Both defenders are capable of being aggressive because they possess the athleticism to recover when the initial challenge does not succeed. Both can defend in larger spaces than slower, more traditional centre-backs.
Lacroix, however, is an unusually explosive recovery defender. His acceleration allows him to chase down forwards, cover the space behind Palace’s wing-backs and survive situations which would leave most centre-backs exposed.
Matsima is quick for his size, but he does not appear to possess quite the same level of recovery speed as Lacroix.
Matsima is generally rational rather than reckless when stepping forward though – which should be reassurng. He uses his frame well, competes strongly in the air and appears capable of winning duels without constantly conceding fouls (something we all know Max does quite regularly)
In possession, he generally favours secure passes into midfield or towards the wing-back rather than repeatedly forcing ambitious balls through several defensive lines.
DOES MATSIMA SUIT SAGE’S SYSTEM?
On a structural level, Matsima appears to fit.
Sage utilised a 3-4-2-1 or closely related back-three system during his time in France. The similarities between his preferred structure and the one Glasner established at Palace were one of the most obvious reasons his appointment made sense, it seems that type of system will continue to be favoured.
Matsima has experience playing within a back three at Augsburg. He has operated both centrally and on the right, although his physical profile makes the outside role particularly interesting.
As a right-sided centre-back under Sage, Matsima would be expected to advance behind Daniel Muñoz, engage attackers early and cover the channel when Palace’s wing-back moves forward.
He possesses the aggression and mobility to perform those tasks. His ability to compete aerially would also help Palace defend the far post when attacks develop from the opposite side.
The question is whether he can execute them with the same security as Lacroix., Matsima would need time to adjust to the speed and pressure of the Premier League.
His passing at Augsburg is encouraging, but playing for Palace would require him to receive under a more aggressive press and make quicker decisions when opponents attempt to trap the outside centre-back near the touchline.
Matsima therefore looks suited to the demands of Sage’s expected system but might not adapt to the EPL overnight.
IS MATSIMA A GOOD TARGET FOR US?
Matsima looks like a logical Palace target.
He is 24, has experience in two major European leagues and already understands the demands of playing within a three-man defence. He offers height, mobility, duel strength and enough composure in possession to contribute to Sage’s expected style.
He also fits the recruitment pattern Palace have used successfully before. The club would be buying a player approaching his prime, but one who still has room to develop and increase in value.
The obstacles are equally clear.
Augsburg have Matsima under contract until 2030 and have no obvious need to accept a discounted offer. Palace would also need to examine his recent fitness record carefully before committing significant money due to the defender missing a portion of the 25/26 campaign through injury.
The more useful question is whether Matsima possesses the raw materials to become another high-level Palace centre-back.
On the current evidence, the answer seems to be yes.
