Why Talented Shea Charles Excites Palace
In recent years, Crystal Palace have shown time and time again that we know how to pick up talent from the EFL Championship, and we might be back at it again…
Ben Jacobs has reported that Crystal Palace, alongside Fulham and Leeds, have joined the race for Southampton midfielder Shea Charles. Whether there is real truth in this, who knows? Until something is confirmed, transfers are always up in the air. But this is not the first time Charles has been linked with Palace, and the profile does make sense – but James Savundra says we aren’t urgently pushing for him thanks to Daichi’s renewal.
But we know Palace want to add midfielders. If David Ozoh leaves, and with Cheick Doucouré still trying to get back to the level we all know he can reach, there is definitely room for a younger, more physical midfield profile.
That is where Shea Charles becomes interesting…
WHO IS SHEA CHARLES?
Charles is a right-footed defensive midfielder, and physically, he looks built for the Premier League.
At 6ft 2in, he has the size, strength and power you would expect from a proper defensive midfielder. He covers ground well, competes in duels, and has the kind of athletic profile Palace have always liked.
But the more interesting part is his technical ability…
Charles is comfortable receiving the ball deep, often demanding possession from the back line and showing real confidence when defenders need an option. In that sense, there are shades of Adam Wharton in the way he is willing to show for the ball under pressure.
But the courage to take responsibility in deeper areas is there, and that matters.
HIS MENTALITY
One thing I like about Charles is that he does not hide.
He wants the ball. He communicates. He offers himself. He can receive on the turn, draw fouls, carry through pressure and help move the team up the pitch.
There is also a directness to his game.
Even though he has often played as the deeper midfielder in Southampton’s double pivot, Charles is actually quite forward-thinking. He looks for line-breaking passes, he carries the ball with power, and he is always trying to push the play on.
That can be a strength and a weakness though because at times, he can force passes. Some of his forward balls can look rushed or slightly loose. But the intent is there, and you can see why a manager like Pierre Sage might like that, given he appreciates directness and high tempo football.
Charles plays with urgency. He wants to move the game forward. He has the athleticism to help in transition, and he does not seem afraid of playing at a high tempo.
That feels very Sage.
HIS DEFENSIVE TRAITS
Defensively, Charles has a lot of tools.
He is strong in duels, powerful across the ground, good aerially and capable of covering space quickly. He tracks runners well, reads danger, and has the physicality to disrupt attacks before they properly develop.
That is exactly the type of midfielder Palace could use.
The one concern I have is that he has a tendency sometimes to overcommit.
Charles likes to engage, and while that aggression is part of what makes him effective, it can also leave him exposed. There are moments where he dives in too quickly, gets beaten, or gives away fouls he probably does not need to give away.
That is not a deal-breaker. He is still young, and those habits can be coached, but it is something to be aware of.
WHY PALACE MAY LIKE CHARLES
The logic is pretty clear.
Charles is young, physical, technically capable and already has proper senior experience. He gives you defensive bite, but he is not just a destroyer. He can carry, pass, receive under pressure and support attacks.
That is the balance Palace should be looking for.
He would not arrive as the finished article. There are still rough edges. The passing can be inconsistent, the decision-making can be rushed, and the defensive aggression needs tidying up.
But the raw profile is very exciting.
For a Palace side that wants to get younger, stronger and more dynamic in midfield, Charles makes a lot of sense.

FINAL THOUGHTS
This is only a link for now, so there is no point getting carried away but as a profile, I really like the idea of Charles in red and blue.
Charles feels like the kind of midfielder Palace should be watching closely: young, powerful, brave on the ball, physically ready, and still with room to develop.
If the price is right, this could be one of those moves that makes a lot of sense.
